Soviet Ekranoplanes…

by Rfun No Comments »

Ekranoplanes were invented by the Soviet Union engineer Rastislav Alexeev. They were created during Cold War, to serve as fast moving strategic “aircrafts” and were based on Caspian as well as Black Sea. These ekranoplanes could fly only meters off the ground, but had an advantage of flying fast under the radars (up to 550km/h on MD-160), carrying heavy loads as well as missiles. The “Caspian Sea Monster” also went into the history for being able to lift and fly 544 tons of dry weight, which is more weight than the biggest airplane in the world AN-225 can fly with…

Kasparov vs. Vibrator…

by Rfun 1 Comment »

We have already told you about a famous chess player, and the leader of Russian opposition, Garry Kasparov. When making one of his speeches, in front of the media someone not very smart decided to make fun of the whole thing and fly a vibrator across the room. This link is available via Youtube, and probably will not be shown on the government controlled Russian TV stations, since the government sees Kasparov’s views and opinions as a big taboo, which after years of bias could destroy a “fragile & pro-government” minds of the Russian public. Ironically Kasparov had gotten the last laugh saying that “This is the face of the current Russian government”…

To get the idea of who Garry Kasparov is, you can take a look at one of his TV appearances before the 2008 Russian “Election”…

Entry Exams in the Russian Cinematography Institution…

by Rfun No Comments »

We had recently shown you pictures from the “Theater Academy in St. Petersburg“, and here is something even more interesting. Russian Institute of Cinematography which was founded in 1919, and since the Soviet time is still abbreviated as “VGIK” (All-Union State Institute of Cinematography) remains to be the world’s oldest educational institution in Cinematography. VGIK was the foremost film school in the Soviet Union and remains one of the world’s most respected film institutions. Its alumni include many prominent actors and directors, many of them non-Russian (the school began accepting foreign students in the middle of the 20th century). It’s fair to say that getting into that institution is extremely hard, and therefore many students try to get in for years, some succeeded and then become struggling artists, very few become successful movie stars and directors and that explains the high number of applicants. Take a look at these nervous students, maybe some of them will become future movie stars…
