The Austrian city of Vienna is pronounced and spelled as “vein” in Russian. Therefore, when saying the word “vein” in Russian, there really is no difference between the blood vessel and the capital of Austria, unless of course you use it in the appropriate context. As a result, we have this ad by Austrian Airlines, where the message on the ad could literally be translated as “Twice a day, in the vein”…

Surprise!!!

For those of you just waking up, here is a new RussianFun.net layout that we are planning to keep from now on. It seems less crowded, as well as a lot cleaner than the old one. The fact that it lets you have 3 different color combinations doesn’t hurt either. The biggest selling point however, was the fact that all of the pictures will from now on fit without resizing (something that was a huge problem on the old layout), so now the quality of pictures will no longer be compromised.

As a result we have a situation where an employee of Russian Embassy in Germany had posted online a copy of a notice, that simply claims that the person on the note is no longer a Russian citizen. A news anchor in Russia was clearly thinking about something else while reading a story about the about the Wimbledon. When taking about the Grand Slam Title, which in Russian is called “Bolshoi Shlem”, (big helmet) she accidentally referred to it as a “Bolshoi Chlen”, which translates as a “big penis” in Russian…
