March 6th, 2008 was the 95th anniversary since the birthday of the legendary WW2 ace Aleksandr Pokryshkin, we already have a big entry about him here. This is the Russia’s Presidential airplane IL96-300, while many have seen the plane itself, the images of the interior are quite rare. Russia had spent $40 million out of the budget to modify the interior of the plane, lets see what they got for their money…

This has nothing to do with Russia, but since we got aviation section here, i think it was necessary to post this anyway. What you see here is a Lufthansa Airbus A320 attempting to land in Hamburg during a strong crosswind. During landing a strong wind gust makes the plane clip it’s wing and lose left winglet…

Major aviation forums are split between blaming the pilots, the weather, or air-traffic controller for allowing the landing - but clearly what matters is that luckily they were able to avoid bigger problems which could definitely happen in that type of an accident…
Pretty amazing pictures of a Russian aviation museum near Moscow, except that the lights are off this time…

Tu-134 is a Soviet twin engine airliner that made it’s first flight in 1963. There were 852 of them built and today a number of Tu-134s is still being used by Aeroflot (main Russian carrier) as well as other small Russian airlines. Having flown on one myself, i must say that this airplane is extremely loud and uncomfortable, the last Tu-134 was built in 1984 making the youngest one flying today 24 years old… Here it can be seen landing on a highway in 1974 Eldar Ryazanov’s movie “Unbelievable Adventures of Italians in Russia“.
Here is the 588th night mission light bomber regiment.

This all female unit got a nickname “Night Witches” by the Germans. And these brave girls were actually proud of their earned nickname.
Germans used to say about them: “We simply couldn’t understand that the Soviet airmen that caused us the greatest trouble were in fact WOMEN. These women feared nothing. They came night after night in their very slow biplanes, and for some periods they wouldn’t give us any sleep at all.”
Ilushin Il-2 Sturmovik was a ground attack aircraft in the Second World War. This aircraft played a crucial role on the Eastern Front, and in Soviet opinion it was the most decisive aircraft in the history of modern land warfare. IL-2 was heavily armored, and proved that it could take a great deal of punishment which made it a difficult target for both ground and aircraft fire to shut down. German troops called IL-2 the “Black Death” while German fighter pilots called it the “Concrete Bomber”.
It was produced by the Soviet Union in large numbers, a total of 36,163 Sturmoviks were built, making it the single most produced military aircraft design in all of aviation history, as well as the third most produced aircraft in history of aviation. . .

Aleksandr Ivanovich Pokryshkin was a great fighter pilot of the Soviet Air Force during the WWII. Pokryshkin almost single-handedly fought to change the obsolete Soviet air combat tactics that were in place in 1941 when the war had started. By the end of the war, his writings had been published and distributed to all Soviet pilots, and he himself had extensively toured fighter regiments lecturing young pilots on his techniques…
Pokryshkin record includes:
- 560 combat missions.
- 156 dogfights with enemy aircrafts.
- he shut down 59 enemy airplanes himself, and 6 with other pilots.*
Sukhoi Superjet-100 is a brand new Russian Regional Jet (75-90 seat capacity). It took Sukhoi 10 years to build it, and companies like Boeing, Illuishin, Yakovlev, and Powerjet have all participated in its development. This plane looks great, and you know what they say, if a plane looks good then it must fly good as well:))

Did you ever wonder what would happen if you dropped a truck out of an airplane? Well, in order to win a military contract, KAMAZ had to put their product to the test. See for yourself what happened to the car…
